Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is all set to release on Thursday, November 5, and the actor has been on quite the promotional tour to ensure its success. Among other things, the film’s VFX has generated significant buzz, especially at a time when films are increasingly depending on AI. Ranbir Kapoor recently opened up about the use of AI in films.
In a recent chat with BBC News about the impact of AI on films, Ranbir said, “Art is always more personal when there is a human touch to it. I think AI, like VFX or camera lenses, can be used as a tool to better your filmmaking. But from the medium we come from – of storytelling, of art, of performing art- I don’t think AI can ever replace that.”
Yash, who is also the film’s co-producer, added, “We have to
be responsible enough to understand that humans are involved in it, and we need to be very cautious in where all we apply this technology. We are survivors. We will come up with some idea, or we will create something which even a machine would have to struggle with.”
Previously, when Ramayana’s first promotional asset video was released, many thought that the VFX work involved the use of AI. Recently, in a chat with Collider, Ranbir addressed this criticism and said that a large number of people online have become ‘CG critics’. He pointed out that many do not even know how CG is created or the countless hours of work that go into it.
“I feel like people are getting more aware, especially with the influx of AI. People are getting more interested in how good the CG is, how good the CG will finally look once the film releases. And I think that is quite funny sometimes. Because people who don’t know how CG is done, people think like someone’s just used some AI and released something,” he said.
Meanwhile, producer Namit Malhotra said viewers should experience Ramayana’s VFX on the big screen before judging it, as the visuals have been created over years specifically for the theatrical experience. Director Nitesh Tiwari also revealed that some VFX sequences took nearly three years to complete.
