Uttar Pradesh’s 20-year-old spinner Prashant Veer will never forget December 16 of 2025. It was the day when he realised his dream of landing an IPL contract, and that too with five-time champions Chennai
Super Kings, where he will be sharing the team dugout and dressing room with the iconic MS Dhoni.
And then there’s the small matter of him becoming the joint-most expensive uncapped player in the history of IPL auctions.
CSK locked in the youngster for the next season of IPL by splashing a stunning Rs 14.20 crore at the mini-auction held in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. In fact, CSK signed another uncapped youngster, Kartik Sharma, for the same amount.
Veer and Kartik are part of IPL history as each surpassed the previous record of Rs 10 crore that Lucknow Super Giants shelled out to sign Avesh Khan for IPL 2023.
Veer and his UP teammate were engrossed in the auction drama, watching it live on their mobile devices. UP captain Rinku Singh was overjoyed when the bid went past Rs 10 crore as other teammates began teasing Veer, with one wondering how he would be able to spend all that money.
When asked about his feeling, Veer replied, “Maza aa raha hai (I am enjoying).”

The left-arm spinner plays domestic cricket for UP and in 9 T20s, has picked up 12 wickets at an economy of 6.45. He has also played two first-class matches in which he has two wickets to his name.
“It was truly surprising for me. I hadn’t expected this much,” Veer told India Today following the bid. “I had spoken to the Chennai officials earlier, and they had mentioned something, but I didn’t anticipate this level of opportunity. I feel very blessed and am excited to meet Dhoni bhai.”
On the prospect of rubbing shoulders with Dhoni, he said, “I’ll try to learn as much as I can from him. Right now, it’s just the beginning. I have to focus on playing cricket.”
Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains to have played the game, and Veer is surely going to learn from his vast experience.
“There’s no specific plan yet. Maybe just a couple of things about cricket, his mindset. If I can learn even a little from him, it’ll be very helpful,” he said.
