Expectations around Love Insurance Kompany were enormous long before the film arrived in theatres. Backed by a successful cast, mounted on an ambitious scale and carrying the signature style of filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, the sci-fi romance had generated strong curiosity among audiences. But weeks after its theatrical release, the director is now candidly speaking about the disappointment that followed its box office run.
The film, which premiered in cinemas on April 10 and began streaming on Amazon Prime Video from May 6, received mixed reactions upon release. It also marked the first major setback in lead actor Pradeep Ranganathan’s recent box office streak after the success of Love Today, Dragon and Dude.
Opening up about the film’s theatrical
performance in a lengthy Instagram post, Vignesh admitted that he had envisioned much bigger numbers for the project.
“I imagined applause… I saw it in the theatres, I manifested laughter – I heard it in the theatres, But still the benchmark of 100 crores wasn’t touched! I was imagining double of that to be honest,” he wrote.
The filmmaker acknowledged that the film ultimately did not connect with audiences in the way he had hoped.
“Even though am a little sad with the net result! Am happy and content cos as I have mentioned earlier, This movie releasing itself is a blockbuster for me! Expected my phone to ring multiples times, To receive appreciation, From voices I admired, From minds I respected. But reality…It chose a different voice,” he shared.
Vignesh also reflected on the emotional and professional challenges that went into making the film, describing the journey as far more difficult than what viewers may have seen publicly.
“And yet—Here I stand. Not broken. Not shaken. But proud… deeply proud. Because behind this film, Were battles no one saw, Sleepless nights, Silent fears, And a thousand hurdles only I could feel. Only God knows, What it took to reach here,” he wrote.
The director further claimed that the film managed to collect over ₹70 crore worldwide despite the mixed reception.
“Not the biggest, Not the loudest, But real… and earned. Forty of it…Came after doubt, After hesitation, After “average” became a word around it. And that…That is love. Love that walked into theatres, Despite the noise, Love that trusted beyond reviews. So my gratitude…Is endless. Thank you for the lovely messages! Your long DMs … detailed appreciation and critics too! Am learning … will keep learning!” he added.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film has collected ₹60.57 crore globally so far. However, production banner Seven Screen Studio stated on May 7 that the worldwide gross stood at ₹66.47 crore.
Interestingly, one of the film’s producers and Vignesh’s wife, Nayanthara, showed support to the director by liking his Instagram post.
