The Premier League is set to host a week-long programme of fan and community activities in Mumbai, marking its first major initiative in India since opening a local office earlier this year. Former England striker and Ballon d’Or winner Michael Owen will be the star attraction, alongside the Premier League Trophy.
The events begin on Saturday, October 4 with Premier League Live, a fan-park style screening at the NESCO Centre. Backed by broadcast partner JioStar, the screening will allow more than 1,000 supporters to watch multiple live fixtures in a matchday setting. Games on the schedule include Leeds vs Tottenham, Manchester United vs Sunderland, and Arsenal vs West Ham, capped by defending champions Liverpool’s clash against Chelsea.
Beyond
screenings, the League is focusing on grassroots development. In collaboration with the British Council, it will run a three-day Community Coach Development Programme involving 27 community coaches. Trainers from the Premier League, Brentford and Newcastle United will lead the sessions, which conclude with a showcase event on Wednesday, October 8 at Cooperage Football Ground. Owen is expected to meet coaches and interact with 80 children from Mumbai’s Oscar Foundation.
The Premier League and British Council’s partnership in India dates back to 2007, with initiatives across 18 states reaching over 7,500 coaches, referees and educators, and impacting 164,000 young people.
Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said the new series of events reflected the league’s long-term commitment: “India is home to millions of knowledgeable football fans who follow the Premier League passionately. This activity builds on our presence here and on the opening of our Mumbai office earlier this year.”
