New Delhi, Jun 26 (PTI) A wanted criminal allegedly associated with the Hashim Baba gang, and ‘kingpin’ of a crime syndicate active in northeast Delhi and trans-Yamuna areas, has been arrested, the Delhi Police said on Friday.
Shabir Ali alias Shabir Chaudhary, who had been absconding since April 2025 in a case registered under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), was apprehended by the Special Cell from the Shambhu border in Haryana on June 14 following specific intelligence and technical surveillance, an official said.
He has been brought to Delhi for further legal proceedings.
According to police, Shabir is a key member of the Hashim Baba gang, and allegedly heads the Shabir Chaudhary-Hashim Baba-Anwar Chacha crime
syndicate which has been linked to multiple cases of extortion, murder, attempt to murder, land grabbing and other crimes in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur, Bhajanpura, Maujpur and Shahdara, as well as in adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh.
“Shabir was evading arrest in an MCOCA case being investigated by the Special Cell. Nine members of the syndicate have already been arrested in the case,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Praveen Kumar Tripathi said.
Investigators said some members of the syndicate are also operating from Nepal and Dubai.
Natives of Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, Shabir’s family currently resides in New Seelampur in Delhi. He allegedly entered the crime world in the mid-1990s and later became involved in gang rivalries, firing incidents and murders across northeast Delhi and the NCR.
Police said his criminal activities intensified after the murder of his brother Shamim Ahmed in 2008.
During incarceration, Shabir came in contact with hardened criminals, including Hashim Baba and Anwar Khan alias Chacha, and subsequently became a prominent member of the gang.
Shabir has been involved in 14 criminal cases, including those of murder, attempted murder, extortion and Arms Act violations, police said. He is also wanted in a 2024 MCOCA case linked to the Farsh Bazar firing incident and is facing a non-bailable warrant in an Arms Act case registered at Bhajanpura police station.
Police said following his arrest, a car and a scooty belonging to him have been impounded.
The Special Cell recently arrested several alleged sharpshooters and criminals linked to the syndicate, recovering illegal firearms and live cartridges in multiple operations, police said. PTI SSJ ARB ARB
