A video of Vibha Devi, the Janata Dal (United) MLA from Nawada, struggling to read her oath on the floor of the house has gone viral on social media. The short clip has sparked a flurry of comments, with
many asking if it was time to make some minimum qualification mandatory even for India’s politicians.
On December 1, during the first session of the 18th Bihar Assembly, where MLAs were administered their oaths, Vibha Devi, struggled and repeatedly stumbled over the words. At one point, she turned to the MLA seated beside her, Manorama Devi, for assistance. With Manorama’s prompts, Vibha Devi managed to complete the oath.
Watch the video here:
A sitting MLA is unable to read her own oath clearly. It’s ironic that in a country where even a peon is required to have a matriculation certificate for a govt job, our MPs and MLAs face no mandatory educational qualification whatsoever.
One could argue that this flexibility… pic.twitter.com/cPCQ74Ahti

Social Media Reaction To Vibha Devi’s Oath Ceremony
The video has ignited sharp reactions across social media.
One user remarked, “If those who decide our laws and budgets can’t even read their own oath, how can we trust them to read, understand, and implement laws that impact millions? Education isn’t elitism, it’s basic accountability.”
Another wrote, “The irony isn’t in the MLA’s stumble, it’s in a system where the government sets bars for every job except the one that writes the laws…”
The irony isnt in the MLAs stumble its in a system where the govt sets bars for every job except the one that writes the laws Thats not flexibility thats hypocrisy. Jo desh peon se qualification maange, us desh ke neta bina qualification kyun baithe?

A comment highlighted, “Now imagine any startup trying to set up base in her constituency and meeting her to ask for land allocation or other formalities, good luck explaining what the company does, how it solves issues, and helps people. By the time she understands, the idea will be outdated.”
Others added that while basic education was required even for entry-level government positions, lawmakers faced no such requirements, questioning the logic behind it.
Vibha Devi Assets
Vibha Devi herself is no stranger to Bihar politics. She was elected to the 18th Assembly from Nawada and is the wife of ‘Bahuhali’ Raj Ballabh Yadav, a jailed strongman and former legislator. In her affidavit for the 2025 elections, she declared total assets of around Rs 31 crore. The liabilities are valued at ₹5.2 Crore. Vibha Devi has declared an annual income of ₹1.1 Crore.
Vibha Devi Education Qualification
As per the affidavit, Vibha Devi mentioned “Literate” in the education column of her bio. But what shocked everyone was her signature. So much so that a person asked Grok to help with her education qualification details.
Based on her 2025 Bihar election affidavit from MyNeta and The Hindu, Vibha Devi’s educational qualification is listed as “Literate.” No higher degrees are mentioned.
