In a corporate world that is now obsessed with the “Next Big Promotion” this HR is making waves with his story. A former HR leader with giants like Wipro and Cognizant, Amit Chilka retired at the age of just 45, and walked away from the corporate grind.
He left his high-pressure Pune gig and moved to the hills of Dehradun, overhauling his entire philosophy on wealth and work.
For many, the idea of retiring with ₹1 crore sounds like a financial gamble, but Chilka’s strategy was built on a foundation of “enough” rather than “more”. He clarified to HT.com that his financial structure wasn’t just a single bank balance, but a diversified safety net including mutual funds, PPF, NPS, and a dedicated child education fund. Crucially, he also owns a flat
in Pune outright, which provides a steady stream of rental income. However, the most significant shift wasn’t just in his bank account, but in his zip code. By moving to Dehradun in 2025, his family managed to slash their monthly living expenses from nearly ₹1.5 lakh in Pune to a lean ₹50,000. This was possible because of the “rent-free” lifestyle, as they moved into a renovated family property that had sat empty for 15 years, and also saw a sharp drop in education costs, with his daughter’s school fees falling from ₹32,000 to just ₹7,000 per month.
Despite the “retirement” label, Chilka hasn’t actually stopped working; he has simply changed the terms of his labour. He was quick to tell HT.com that he isn’t merely drawing from his corpus every month.
Instead, he spent 18 months building a “work-life by choice,” operating an HR consulting practice and organizing leadership retreats in the mountains. This income covers his daily needs, allowing his ₹1 crore investment to continue compounding as a long-term security blanket. Today, the former corporate leader spends his time on morning walks and quiet evenings with his wife—luxuries that cost almost nothing but provide a wealth of satisfaction that the corporate ladder never could.
