A Delhi NCR-based content creator has sparked a fresh debate on urban housing after comparing high-rise apartments to ‘matchboxes’ in a viral video. Shared on Instagram by Ishana Nautiyal, the clip has struck a chord with many viewers, while others have come forward to defend the realities and advantages of vertical living in metro cities.
The video is filmed from the balcony of her 19th-floor apartment, offering a sweeping view of densely packed residential towers. From that vantage point, the buildings appear nearly identical, arranged in tight clusters across the complex.
As she pans her camera across the skyline, she remarks, “Yeh dekho ji, badi badi buildings, jaise maachis ke dabbe hote hain, waise yeh buildings hain. (Look at this, these
tall buildings are like matchboxes.)”
Her observation struck a chord online, particularly among those familiar with compact city living. She points out that her son is among them, playing cricket, as she keeps an eye on him from above.
Continuing her reflection, she adds, “Toh yeh hai flat walon ki zindagi, maachis ke dabbon mein. (This is what life in apartments feels like, living inside matchboxes.)”
As the video circulated widely, it triggered a wave of reactions on social media. One comment read, “What will happen if the lift stops working?”
Another pointed to the financial burden, writing, “This match box comes with 20-30 years of EMI.”
However, not everyone agreed with the sentiment. One user remarked, “Be grateful for what you have.”
Another wrote, “It’s far better because no one judges you, there’s no unnecessary gossip, people understand the meaning of privacy, and there are many other positives.”
Another user noted, “This match box comes with 20-30 years of EMI.”
“At least they have lots of neighbours to play and chill,” said another.
