A slow weekend at the box office has pushed Chand Mera Dil further into a tricky phase as it enters its second week in cinemas. The Ananya Panday and Lakshya-starrer, backed by Dharma Productions, has not managed to maintain strong momentum after its release, with collections continuing to stay modest despite a brief weekend rise in its opening days.
The film, directed by Vivek Soni and co-written with Tushar Paranjape, hit theatres on May 22 and opened to mixed reactions from both critics and audiences. According to trade tracking site Sacnilk, the film added ₹1.30 crore net on its second Friday, taking its overall domestic total to ₹20.75 crore. This comes after a first week that ended at ₹19.45 crore.
The opening weekend had offered some early
hope, with the film earning ₹3 crore on day one, followed by ₹3.75 crore on Saturday and ₹4.25 crore on Sunday. However, the numbers softened quickly once weekdays kicked in. Monday saw a drop to ₹2.25 crore, followed by ₹2.10 crore on Tuesday and ₹1.90 crore on Wednesday. A slight recovery came on Thursday with ₹2.20 crore, but it wasn’t enough to significantly shift the overall trajectory.
For context, the performance puts the film in a tougher spot when compared with recent releases of its lead actors. Ananya Panday’s previous outing Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, co-starring Kartik Aaryan, had crossed ₹30.15 crore in its first eight days despite mixed reviews. Lakshya’s debut film Kill, on the other hand, had earned ₹11.90 crore in the same timeframe, but had stronger critical appreciation backing its run.
Now all eyes are on whether the film can see any improvement over its second-weekend collections or if it continues to slow down further at the box office.
On the storytelling front, Chand Mera Dil follows the journey of two college students, played by Ananya Panday and Lakshya, whose relationship is tested as they step into adulthood and begin dealing with responsibilities that reshape their understanding of love. The film explores how young romance evolves when faced with real-world pressure and changing priorities. Produced by Dharma Productions, the project has seen multiple postponements before finally arriving in theatres.
Meanwhile, a short clip from the film has recently been circulating on social media, showing Ananya Panday’s character Chandni performing a Bharatanatyam fusion dance sequence. The clip sparked online discussion and criticism, prompting a response from her co-star and on-screen mother Charu Shankar.
“I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, but trolling is never in good taste. Conversations around art are valid. Mockery is not. The sequence being discussed was always conceived as a contemporary, edgy breakout introduction for Chandni’s character. In the film’s visual storytelling, this moment announces the arrival of a young woman who is not afraid to break the rules,” said Charu, who played her mom, Nivedita.
With its second week underway, the film’s box office performance now depends heavily on word of mouth and whether audience interest can pick up in the coming days.
