“Babar Azam joins the Sixers for #BBL15. The King has arrived,” wrote Sydney Sixers in an X post dated June 13, 2025. Pakistan cricket fans rejoiced at the news, anticipating a big Babar show in the Big Bash League. Months later, the star batter has found himself in trends charts across cricket-loving nations, albeit for all the unflattering reasons. Babar has had a rough season in Australia’s Twenty20 (T20) tournament thus far. However, it was his time out in the middle with Steve Smith that made the batter a soft target amongst fans.
Looking to capitalise on the Power Surge against Sydney Thunder at the SCG, Smith denied Babar a single on the last ball of the 11th over. Babar was visibly upset, a moment that bewildered the fans. To rub salt
into his wounded ego, Smith took advantage of the strike, smashing a record 32 runs in the next over. Babar was clean bowled the moment he took strike in the 13th over. The Pakistan batter was livid, and he expressed his anger to the boundary cushions during his agitated walk back to the pavilion.
The 31-year-old cricketer needed another two days to brush off his upset, the Sydney Sixers skipper Moises Henriques revealed. “It took a couple of days for that to settle down,” Henriques said, before adding, “To be honest, think it’s just a bit of a misunderstanding of culture of each other.
“It’s a pretty common thing in our culture, and maybe for him he wasn’t used to it and didn’t quite understand. Once it was explained to him he was absolutely fine. They’ve kissed and made up and it’s two of the greats back friendly again,” the Sixers captain, mic’d up during the Qualifier final against the Perth Scorchers, added.
Babar’s on-and-off-field tantrums ever since the denial of a single have put him under the scanner as the crowds gathered at stadiums and those who continue to tune in for the BBL from homes are heavily scrutinising each time they spot the Pakistan batter in action.
Fielding Woes
On the day of the “single controversy”, Babar was also battered online for his sloppy work in the outfield. Incredibly, Smith was found in close vicinity.
Positioned at the long-on area, Babar was expected to put in a dive to stop a boundary smacked by Nic Maddinson during the 16th over, bowled by Ben Manenti. This left Smith confused.
An almost identical shot came from Maddinson’s bat on the very next delivery, with the ball heading to the same region. This time, however, Smith, fielding at long-off, dived to save a certain boundary.
Commentators had a chuckle, and so did the crowds who trolled Babar with cruel memes and mockery.
"GET OUT THE WAY, BABAR!" 😂

Batting Woes
Funny things keep happening on the cricket field, and cricketers aren’t immune to criticism and constant scrutiny. Babar has had several chances with the bat to silence the naysayers. Unfortunately for the star batter, his bat has, thus far, remained silent in the BBL.
202 runs in 11 matches while striking at 103 is not a good look for the Sydney Sixers’ opening batter.

Duck
Two days after being denied that single, Babar made just 1 run in 7 deliveries during his franchise’s final league match against Brisbane Heat. The single at Gabba was then followed by a two-ball duck when he was left stumped, quite literally.
It's a duck for Babar Azam 😳

Babar, facing Scorchers’ left-arm spinner Cooper Connolly, departed without troubling the scorers. Worse, his team perished for 99 while chasing the 148-run target.
Battering On Social Media
Sydney Sixers have ironically witnessed a massive surge in engagement on X, and cricket viewers have credited Babar for it.
“Babar Azam’s legacy in this Big Bash is the views generated for the BBL and Sydney Sixers social media accounts,” @cric_blog on X remarked.

At a glance, it seems even the Pakistan cricket fans haven’t spared Babar for his torrid display in the BBL15.

“Babar Azam has imploded since Steve Smith denied him that single. W, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, W, 0, W. Ten balls, three wickets, 1 total run. Pathetic,” another jibed.
