Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the country’s top-performing state in residential rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, setting a new national record in June 2026.
According to the state government, Uttar Pradesh installed 71,888 residential rooftop solar systems during the month, the highest monthly installation recorded by any state since the launch of the scheme. It is also the state’s best-ever monthly performance.
So far, the state has received 10,89,716 applications under the scheme, of which 6,36,745 rooftop solar systems have already been installed. Uttar Pradesh has consistently led the country in monthly installations in recent months, emerging as the fastest-growing state in the residential
rooftop solar sector.
Based on the current pace of installations, the state government estimates that Uttar Pradesh could overtake Maharashtra by the end of July to become India’s second-largest state in terms of total residential rooftop solar installations. The next target is to surpass Gujarat and claim the top position nationally.
The state has installed more than 2,148 MW of residential rooftop solar capacity so far. Subsidies worth over Rs 5,500 crore have been directly transferred to consumers under the scheme.
Officials said the rapid expansion has also boosted employment and business opportunities. More than 7,000 companies and vendors are currently engaged in the sector, creating over 80,000 direct and indirect jobs across the state.
The installed rooftop solar systems are generating nearly 96 lakh units of electricity every day, providing consumers with free power worth an estimated Rs 6 crore daily. The sector is also generating business worth over Rs 40 crore each day.
The government added that the rooftop solar programme has helped save more than 9,000 acres of land that would otherwise have been required for conventional large-scale solar power projects.
Officials credited the achievement to the combined efforts of consumers, solar vendors, the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), banks, power distribution companies and other stakeholders.
With Uttar Pradesh now leading the country in monthly residential rooftop solar installations, the state government has set its sights on becoming India’s number one state in terms of overall rooftop solar capacity under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
