Actor Ram Pothineni, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Andhra King Taluka, recently spoke about the ongoing comparisons between the film and Shah Rukh Khan’s 2016 psychological thriller
Fan. During a promotional interaction with host Sreemukhi and co-star Bhagyashri Borse, Ram addressed why audiences assumed that the new film may follow a similar storyline.
According to the actor, the confusion started with the film’s tagline. “When the tagline of Andhra King Taluka was revealed as ‘biopic of a fan,’ many thought it was a reference to Shah Rukh Khan’s film, Fan. But none of the films which had a fan explored this relationship. Either they have been made a villain or they have explored a friendship,” Ram explained.
“A Pure Relationship That Has Been Misunderstood”
Ram emphasized that unlike other films where fans are portrayed through extremes, Andhra King Taluka examines the emotional depth of the fan-star bond. “No one explored purely the relationship between a star and a fan, which is one of the most beautiful relationships. And it’s misunderstood by everybody; it’s unconditional love. What is a greater love than doing something for someone who doesn’t know you exist?” he shared.
He further added that the film does not portray obsession as a threat, nor does it villainise admiration. Instead, it aims to unpack the emotional journey and personal identity that many fans tie to their favourite stars.
Why The Comparisons Began
Directed by Mahesh Babu Pachigolla, Andhra King Taluka features Ram Pothineni alongside Nimma Upendra, Bhagyashri Borse, Rao Ramesh, Murali Sharma and Rahul Ramakrishna. The promotional material has shown Ram’s character deeply devoted to the star played by Upendra. In the trailer, he is even mocked for his loyalty, which led many viewers to recall Fan, where Shah Rukh Khan played both a celebrity and his obsessive admirer.
However, Ram pointed out that the takeaway is different. Fan, directed by Maneesh Sharma, told the story of a fan whose admiration turns into anger when the star rejects him. The conflict leads the story into darker territory, exploring obsession and identity.
In contrast, Andhra King Taluka aims to celebrate the fan’s love rather than turn it into conflict. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on November 28.
