A viral social media post about a Pune couple’s divorce has triggered a debate online after claims emerged that a working woman earning over Rs 1.4 lakh a month was granted Rs 1.35 lakh in monthly maintenance.
The post, shared on X, claimed that a Pune-based couple, both employed, decided to part ways after experiencing serious marital problems within six months of their marriage. According to the details mentioned in the viral post, the husband was earning an in-hand salary of Rs 2,79,499 per month, while the wife took home Rs 1,41,436 monthly.
The post further stated that the husband was also financially supporting his parents. Despite the wife having a substantial income of her own, it was claimed that she argued before the court that she was entitled
to maintain a lifestyle similar to the one she had enjoyed during the marriage.
As a result, the court reportedly directed the husband to pay Rs 1,35,000 per month as maintenance.
Based on the figures shared in the post, the wife’s total monthly income would rise to Rs 2,76,436 after receiving maintenance, while the husband’s remaining monthly income would stand at Rs 1,44,499.
The post also highlighted the tax implications of the arrangement. It claimed that the husband would not be eligible to claim any tax deduction on the maintenance amount because maintenance payments are generally treated as personal expenses under income tax rules.
Consequently, he would continue paying income tax on his full salary, including the amount paid as maintenance. The post concluded with the remark, “ITD won.”
In the comments section, X user @Naliniskitchen clarified that the information had been sourced from Grapevine.
As the post gained traction, social media users flooded the platform with reactions, many expressing strong opinions on the reported maintenance order.
“What is this claim that she deserve life style of 6 months…..Alumni must be for financial support and not lifestyle support….. Since when financial support became lifestyle support? So if some one downgrade her lifestyle will this applicable to that as well?” wrote one user.
“I have never seen such an idiotic judgment. Husband should not give her a single rupee. Many uneducated fools are nowadays becoming judges. Shame on such Milords!” commented another.
A third user questioned the logic behind the maintenance amount, saying, “If she is already earning then it doesn’t make sense to get half salary..unfair.”
Some responses were more critical of the legal framework itself. “Now you know why hindu population is collapsing. The rascals in Delhi are doing it by creating one sided laws of this kind with woke judges who need to be imprisoned for such hopeless rulings! There is no justice delivered here!!!” wrote one person.
Another user posted, “Reason why women deserve less, or nothing at this point! What a bunch of useless modern b!tches to man & family, on top this entitled behaviour in the name of rights and judiciary baffonary! Kitchen gender need to kicked back into kitchens, not in any workforce or useless careers.”

One commenter remarked, “In present times, being a man is a grave crime! women are very smart they know the laws and creates situation leading to divorce..men are fools…every man must sur his wife for mental torture and get suitable claims..”
However, not all reactions opposed the concept of alimony. One user argued that such cases often distort public perception of maintenance laws, writing, “Because of cases like these alimony purpose has been tarnished ,now every man thinks alimony is a weapon against man where as it’s brought to give justice to needy.”
