Stock exchanges BSE and NSE will remain closed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra, as per a circular issued by the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
“In partial
modification to Exchange circular earlier, the Exchange hereby notifies Thursday, January 15, 2026, as a trading holiday in the Capital Market (CM) segment on account of Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra,” the NSE said.
Earlier, the exchange had indicated that trading would remain open on January 15, with only a settlement holiday in place because of the civic polls. However, the latest notification confirms a complete trading holiday.
As a result, trading in equities, equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLBs), currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives will remain suspended on both BSE and NSE for the day. The commodity derivatives segment will also remain closed during the morning session.
The Maharashtra government has declared January 15 a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act to facilitate local body elections across 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The notification was issued under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, using powers delegated to the state government by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1968.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the BMC said the holiday was announced through an order of the state’s General Administration and Industries and Labour departments.
“The public holiday will apply across Mumbai, including the city and the eastern and western suburbs. Government and semi-government offices, public sector units, banks and other establishments will remain closed on that day. The government order also applies to voters registered in Mumbai but working outside the city, allowing them to vote,” the release said.
Votes will be counted on January 16. Notably, markets were also shut during the previous civic polls held in 2017.
Stock market holidays in 2026
Stock markets will remain closed for a total of 16 holidays in 2026. Of these, four fall on Saturdays or Sundays, when markets are otherwise shut.
March will see the highest number of holidays, with markets closed for three days on account of Holi (March 3), Shri Ram Navami (March 26) and Shri Mahavir Jayanti (March 31). February, July and August will have no effective trading holidays, as national holidays during these months fall on weekends.
