One of the greatest white-ball cricketers of all time, Rohit Sharma, is desperate to win an ODI World Cup title for India. The 38-year-old right-handed batter led India to the final of the ODI World Cup in 2023, but they failed to win the top prize. In 2015 and 2019, he was the member of the Indian team that reached the semifinals. Rohit, who is the fourth highest run-getter in ODI World Cup history, has made it clear once again that he wants to play in the 2027 edition of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, and he will do everything in his capacity to be part of India’s squad.
In a video going viral on the internet for a recent event, when Rohit was asked if the “ODI World Cup in South Africa is going to be an absolute laser focus for him over the next
18 months”, he replied by saying, “Yeah, I will definitely want to go out there (South Africa) and win the World Cup for my country (India). That is something that I’ve always looked upon. I’ve grown up watching this 50-over World Cup. There was no T20 World Cup back then, no World Test Championship, and no IPL. So, we’ve all grown up watching the 50-overs World Cup, and that was the pinnacle of cricket, which used to happen every four years. So there was desperation; there was so much waiting for that one trophy. And yeah, I really want that trophy as well. So I’m going to try and do everything in my power, in my capacity, to go and try and win that.”
Question: There’s a Cricket World Cup in South Africa next year. Is that going to be the absolute laser focus for Rohit Sharma over the next 18 months?

Rohit, who is India’s third highest scorer in ODIs, scored 597 runs in the ODI World Cup 2023, and in the 2019 edition, which was played in England and Wales, he amassed a total of 648 runs for the Virat Kohli-led side to finish as the highest run scorer.
He scored 650 runs in 14 ODIs for Team India in 2025 and also led them to the ICC Champions Trophy title, that too with a 100% win record.
Rohit, who has retired from Tests and T20Is, will next play for India in July 2026 against England. India are scheduled to travel to England in July for a three-match ODI series.
