Ryland Grace might’ve made the almost 12-year journey to the Tau Ceti sun-like star to find out why it is safe from the astrophage eating the Sun back home, but in reality, our space technology is not as advanced as yet. Humans might have walked on the moon, have landed multiple robots on Mars and have sent two spacecrafts into interstellar space; however, we are yet to send a human beyond the moon.
To further our understanding of how humanity can survive in space, NASA, the American space organisation, is sending a crew of 4 astronauts on a 10-day mission to the moon. The launch is scheduled to take place from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:24 p.m. EDT (3:54 AM IST, April 2) on April 1.
The crew will journey around the Moon and back in
their and Artemis II will be the first crewed test of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft. It will be test the technologies that will be needed for long-term lunar exploration and human missions to Mars. It will also help to further understand the moon.
To fuel them on their journey, the four astronauts — NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with the Canadian Space Agency’s Jeremy Hansen — will bring along food that can be stored safely for weeks in their Orion spacecraft, then prepared quickly.

“Food selections are developed in coordination with space food experts and the crew to balance calorie needs, hydration, and nutrient intake while accommodating individual crew preferences,” NASA officials wrote in a March 3 statement about the Artemis 2 menu.
The press statement from NASA further added that the food eaten in space by the astronauts has to be “easy to prepare and consume in microgravity, minimise crumbs, and remain safe and stable throughout the mission”.
