Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay on Saturday penned a heartfelt letter to families of those who lost their lives in last month’s stampede in Karur, saying that the pain
is shared deeply by him and the TVK community.
“We are suffering from the loss of our family members in the unbearable painful incident that occurred in Karur. We once again assure you that we will be there to comfort and support you in every way in this situation,” he said in a letter.
Reiterating his commitment made during a video call with the victims’ families, Vijay assured them that steps are being taken to secure legal permission for an in-person meeting. “Once permission is received, we will definitely meet,” he said.
The TVK chief also confirmed the transfer of Rs 20 lakh to the next of kin of each victim. The amount was sent today, following an earlier announcement made on September 28.
“We kindly request you to accept it as our helping hand,” the letter stated, concluding with a message of hope: “With the grace of God, we will get through this difficult time,” he added.
Earlier today, the party announced that Rs 20 lakh each has been credited to the families of those who lost their lives in the Karur stampede. “The money, Rs 20 lakh each, has been sent to 39 families, totalling to Rs 7.8 crore,” the party said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’.
The TVK would adopt the families of the victims and support them in education and employment as long-term measure, the party had earlier announced.
Karur Stampede
A political rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu’s Karur took a tragic turn after a stampede broke out that left at least 40 dead and several others injured.
Tens of thousands of supporters gathered at the venue for Vijay’s rally, despite police only allowing 10,000 people. Vijay arrived at the venue nearly six hours behind schedule, intensifying the already chaotic situation. As he began his speech, the restless crowd surged toward the stage, breaking through barricades and triggering a stampede.
The fainted people were shifted to hospitals in ambulances, and some of them are reportedly battling for their lives.
Vijay had later announced that Rs 20 lakh would be given to the families of those who lost their lives at the stampede.
