Guwahati, Jul 29 (PTI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Assam government within two weeks on a recent explosion at a factory in Cachar district that claimed four lives and rendered two others seriously injured, an official statement said on Wednesday.
The commission took suo motu cognisance of a media report about the incident, and observed that if the contents of the article were true, they raise serious issues of violation of human rights, it said.
Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Assam chief secretary and the Cachar superintendent of police, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
“The report is expected to include the status of the health of the injured, as well
as disbursement of compensation to the next of kin of the deceased and to the injured workers,” the statement added.
The four workers were killed in a suspected cylinder explosion in an iron casting unit under Udharbond police station of Cachar on July 26.
Five people, including the owner of the unit, have been arrested in the case so far.
