Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Arabian adventure may be approaching a shocking end.
Sky Sports and Daily Mail report that the Portuguese superstar is reportedly weighing up a summer exit from Al Nassr, with a return to Europe or a move to Major League Soccer emerging as realistic options.
Ronaldo’s frustration has been brewing for weeks, but it came into sharper focus when he was absent from Al Nassr’s recent Saudi Pro League win over Al Riyadh.
While officially unexplained, reports suggest the 40-year-old is unhappy with how the club is being run — and, more importantly, how it is being backed.
At the heart of the issue is funding. Ronaldo believes Al Nassr are not receiving the same level of financial support as fellow Public Investment Fund (PIF)-controlled
clubs Al Hilal, Al Ahli and Al Ittihad.
That perception has only intensified after Al Hilal secured Karim Benzema, while Al Nassr’s only January addition was young Iraqi midfielder Hayder Abdulkareem.
For a player still driven by trophies, that imbalance matters a lot.
Al Hilal currently sit one point clear at the top of the table, and Ronaldo had hoped for a more aggressive transfer window as he chases his first Saudi league title.
Saudi officials have urged Ronaldo to return to action, expressing surprise at his discontent given his record-breaking contract, reportedly worth close to £500,000 a day.
From their perspective, league funding is equal across PIF clubs, and Al Nassr’s quieter January is attributed to the £100 million already spent this season and strict sustainability regulations.
Still, perception often matters as much as reality. Ronaldo has been deeply involved in club affairs since his arrival, which makes his current dissatisfaction all the more striking.
Crucially, his contract includes a €50 million (£43m) summer release clause. With 18 months remaining and his 41st birthday approaching, Ronaldo may decide now is the right moment to choose his final chapter, rather than simply ride out the deal.
For now, Saudi football insists nothing has changed. But with Ronaldo’s silence growing louder, the question isn’t just whether he plays next weekend — it’s whether his Saudi Pro League era is quietly nearing its end.
