When the youth design their own postal space — the result is nothing short of inspiring. India Post on Monday inaugurated Kerala’s first “Gen-Z” post office extension counter at CMS College Kottayam, Kerala — a striking
example of blending tradition with modern sensibilities.
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia lauded the initiative, noting “when Gen Z design their own India Post office in the ‘City of Letters’, this is how it turns out… refreshing, creative & rooted in tradition.”

At its heart, the new counter is built on a philosophy that resonates deeply with the student community: “Of the students, by the students, for the students.” Working in collaboration with India Post officials, CMS College students helped reimagine what a post office can be — beyond a place of postal transactions.
Walking into the space, one is greeted by a leafy, café-style ambience: picnic-table seating, a vertical garden, and even extra benches crafted from refurbished tyres — a subtle yet powerful nod to sustainability.
The space has a dedicated “work-ledge” with charging points, acknowledging that today’s students often combine work, study and connectivity.

But the designers haven’t forgotten leisure. The extension counter includes a cozy reading nook, bookshelves filled with volumes, board games, and a relaxed hang-out vibe — making it a community hub, not merely a service counter.
The centre is equipped with a fully functional booking counter, complete with packaging materials and a “MyStamp” printer to facilitate parcel booking, registered post, and customised stamps — bringing core postal services directly onto campus.
The space brings together heritage, modernity, and youth aspirations. The walls are decorated with artwork created by students and staff — celebrating India Post’s legacy, Kerala’s cultural heritage, and Kottayam’s identity as the “Land of Letters.”
The result is a space that feels both rooted in tradition and alive with creative energy.
In an age when digital communication often dominates, the Gen-Z post office stands as a bold reaffirmation of the enduring value of mail, human connection, and community spaces. It shows how an institution like India Post can evolve — not by abandoning its legacy, but by reimagining it to resonate with a new generation.
