Strong reviews and audience appreciation do not always guarantee a strong box office run. That appears to be the case for one of this weekend’s most talked-about releases, which has earned praise from critics but is still struggling to attract large crowds to theatres.
Anurag Kashyap’s crime drama Bandar, headlined by Bobby Deol, registered some growth on its second day at the box office, but the overall numbers remain modest. The film, which arrived in cinemas on Friday, has received positive reactions from critics, with many particularly applauding Bobby Deol’s performance.
According to trade website Sacnilk, Bandar earned ₹95 lakh on Saturday. While that marks a noticeable increase from its opening-day collection of ₹50 lakh, the film has yet
to record a single-day collection of over ₹1 crore.
After two days in theatres, the film’s India net collection stands at ₹1.45 crore, while its India gross earnings have reached ₹1.74 crore.
The film is facing competition from several new releases currently drawing audiences to cinemas. These include Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur’s romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Ram Charan’s sports drama Peddi, and Hollywood horror release Obsession.
Despite the box office challenges, Bandar has emerged as one of the most critically acclaimed films of the week. Many reviewers have described it as one of Anurag Kashyap’s strongest works in recent years, while Bobby Deol’s performance has been widely appreciated.
The story follows Samar, played by Bobby Deol, a former singer-actor whose fading career takes a dramatic turn when he is arrested after a sexual assault complaint is filed against him by a woman named Gayatri, portrayed by Sapna Pabbi.
As the case gains attention, Samar finds himself trapped in a whirlwind of legal proceedings and media scrutiny. While he maintains his innocence and claims that the complainant is a stalker, the narrative explores his struggle against what appears to be a deeply flawed and corrupt system. The title Bandar reflects his situation as he is pushed from one challenge to another with little control over his circumstances.
Apart from Bobby Deol, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Sanya Malhotra, Saba Azad, Raj B Shetty, Jitendra Joshi, Riddhi Sen, Indrajith Sukumaran and Nagesh Bhonsle.
The screenplay has been written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, the creative minds behind acclaimed projects such as Paatal Lok, Kohrra and Udta Punjab. The film has been produced by Nikhil Dwivedi’s Saffron Magicworks in association with Zee Studios.
Ahead of the film’s release, Bobby Deol also received support from his family. After attending a special screening, Esha Deol praised her brother’s work and wrote, “You are in the best form ever! Undoubtedly the finest actor today. Enduring and vulnerable! Way to go, bhaiya.”
The coming days will be crucial for Bandar as the film looks to convert critical acclaim into stronger ticket sales at the box office.
