Security forces on Friday recovered a mortar shell in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, which was later safely defused by the Army’s bomb disposal team, officials said.
The live shell was discovered during digging work near an Army unit in Rampur area of north Kashmir. The site was immediately secured, and local police were notified about the recovery, news agency PTI reported.
“Information was received telephonically by PS Boniyar from an Indian Army unit regarding the detection of one 51 mm live mortar shell during digging in an army unit’s rear HQ at Rampur Boniyar, within the jurisdiction of PS Boniyar,” a police spokesman said in a statement, according to a report in the news outlet Greater Kashmir.
The Army’s bomb disposal squad carried
out a controlled defusal of the shell in the presence of police. Officials confirmed that the operation was completed without any damage to life or property.
“The live mortar shell was safely disposed of by an Army BDDS team in the presence of SHO Boniyar, Insp Hilal Ahmad. There was no loss of life or damage to property during the operation,” he added.
