Moving to another country for studies can sometimes change much more than a person’s career plans. For one Indian man, moving to Germany in 2021 for a master’s degree slowly changed how he saw himself and his future.
He initially had a simple plan: complete his studies, gain some experience and eventually return to India to take care of his family business. But life in Germany took him in a very different direction.
Germany Changed More Than His Career
The man shared his experience in a Reddit post titled “Germany ended up changing my entire life”. He said he moved to Germany in 2021 to pursue his master’s degree.
“At the time, my plan was pretty straightforward: come to Germany, finish my studies, and eventually go back to India to run the family
business,” he wrote. He completed his master’s in 2024 and found a job around the same time. Earlier this year, he also received permanent residency in Germany.
But his biggest changes were personal. He said he had been very introverted while studying in India, especially during his bachelor’s degree. Living alone in a new country pushed him out of his comfort zone.
“Moving to a completely new country and living alone changed that,” he wrote. He said he started meeting more people, making friends, going out and trying things he had not done before. The experience also helped him become more comfortable with himself.
His Personal Life Took An Unexpected Turn
Germany also brought an important change to his personal life. While building a new life there, he met his partner and is now preparing to get married next week.
The man said Germany was supposed to be only a temporary stop when he first arrived. Over time, however, the country became a much bigger part of his life.
“The funny thing is that Germany was initially just supposed to be a temporary chapter of my life. But now, a few years later, I have become a better version of myself,” he wrote.
His plans have also changed professionally. Instead of simply returning to India, he is now working on expanding his family business in Germany while also trying to build something of his own. He said he has become more willing to take risks and explore opportunities.
He also found starting a company easier than he had expected after reading about the process online. “The start up support is really great, atleast in south,” he said.

Reddit Users Share Their Germany Experiences
The post led other people living in Germany to share how the country had affected their own lives.
A user wrote, “Wow the exact opposite happened to me. Extrovert in my country became introvert in Germany. Now i am an introvert in both.” Another said, “It is refreshing to read a positive story amidst all the daily complaints. Congratulations on your wedding next week and on successfully building your life here.”
A person wrote, “I’ve lived in Germany now for 4 years and I find it life changing also. I love it and can’t see myself living anywhere else.”
Another shared, “I feel like Germany also changed my life. Without the continual worry over money, rent and health care, I could take the time to get a second degree, start a business, get involved in politics, learn new hobbies and sports, and meet my future husband.”
