Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma once again found himself at the centre of controversy — this time for a Diwali post that shocked many online. On October 20, 2025, while the rest of the country was celebrating
the festival of lights, the director posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) that many found deeply insensitive.
RGV wrote, “In INDIA only one day is DIWALI and in GAZA, every day is DIWALI,” adding three fire emojis. Within hours, the post went viral, drawing millions of views and a storm of angry reactions.

Netizens Call Out RGV’s “Insensitive” Remark
Social media users slammed the filmmaker for his comment, calling it disrespectful and heartless. One user wrote, “You will take years to become a human. You don’t even know the difference between celebration and devastation.”
Another said, “You’re a disgusting human being. Making fun of genocide doesn’t make you powerful, it shows who you are — a repulsive filthy rat.”
Others urged him to show compassion, with one comment reading, “Gaza doesn’t need your dark humour. They need humanity. There’s nothing festive about war.”
Not His First Controversy
This isn’t the first time Ram Gopal Varma has been criticised for his posts. In September, the Satya director had stirred outrage on Teachers’ Day when he listed his “inspirations” on social media. The list included respected figures like Amitabh Bachchan, Steven Spielberg, Sridevi, Ayn Rand, and Bruce Lee — but also underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, which left netizens furious.
The Gaza Context
According to recent reports, the ongoing conflict in Gaza since October 2023 has claimed over 68,000 Palestinian lives, making RGV’s comparison to Diwali — a festival symbolising light and hope — especially distasteful to many.
RGV’s Upcoming Project
Despite the backlash, Ram Gopal Varma appears focused on his next film. He has reunited with Manoj Bajpayee after 27 years for a horror comedy titled Police Station Mein Bhoot, also starring Genelia D’Souza. The shoot began on September 1, 2025.
Ram Gopal Varma, often called RGV, is known for his gritty storytelling and bold filmmaking style. He rose to fame with cult classics like Shiva (1990), Satya (1998), and Company (2002), which redefined the gangster genre in Bollywood. Over the years, he has explored diverse subjects through films such as Rangeela, Bhoot, and Sarkar.
