The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will play host to Team India’s opening game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Saturday. Suryakumar Yadav’s men are the reigning champions and firm favourites to win their Group A fixture against the United States of America.
The Men in Blue will also be taking on Namibia (February 12), Pakistan (February 15) and the Netherlands (February 18) in their quest to make it through to the Super 8 stage.
India have been the most dominant side in the shortest format of the game since reclaiming the T20 World Cup title undefeated in the Caribbean and USA two years back.
Since taking over the reins in July 2024, Suryakumar hasn’t lost a single bilateral series besides overseeing the title winning run at the last
year’s Asia Cup.
Team India hammered Australia, South Africa and New Zealand in the lead up to the competition, winning each of the five-match assignments with scorelines of 2-1, 3-1 and 4- 1 respectively.
The tournament co-hosts also flexed their power and depth in their only warm-up game in Navi Mumbai, beating South Africa after compiling 240/6 in their 20 overs.
During the warm-up game, India also signaled towards a change in their regular playing combination with the absence of the struggling wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. With Samson out of form, the team management brought in like-for-like Ishan Kishan to the top of the order.
Kishan closed out the series versus New Zealand recently with a memorable century in Thiruvananthapuram. Head coach Gautam Gambhir may also have to put his thinking cap on for the bowling department, with uncertainty around the participation of
pacer Harshit Rana following an injury.
For the USA, it will be a chance to leave their mark against a formidable opponent such as India two years after qualifying for the Super 8 following their superlative triumph over Pakistan in the group stage. They also gave India a bit of a scare in their close-fought loss in New York.
Mumbai Weather Forecast For IND-USA
The forecast is for mostly clear skies, which should give us an uninterrupted game of cricket at the Wankhede Stadium.
Both teams can expect higher temperatures as we gradually move past the peak Indian winter, ranging from 23 degrees Celsius to the 34 degrees Celsius. Expect the humidity to nudge just over 50 per cent, with the wind flowing at close to 10 km/hour.
