It’s done, the Ruben Amorim experiment at Manchester United comes to an abrupt end.
The Portuguese boss, on Monday, was sacked by the Red Devils a mere 14 months after his appointment.

“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” an official statement from the Red Devils read.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future,” United wrote.
On
a side note, it was also mentioned that former midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis. His first game would be away at Burnley on Wednesday night, with a permanent appointment likely to be announced in the summer.
The decision was made by the club’s leadership team, including Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox, following a breakdown in relations behind the scenes.
Amorim’s final game of his 14-month spell in charge was the 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, which left them sixth in the Premier League after 20 matches.
His post-match presser probably didn’t do him any favours, as the Portuguese coach made it crystal clear: he didn’t come to Old Trafford to be a head coach. He came to be the manager. And, pointedly, he hinted his time may already be ticking down.
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not the coach,” Amorim said, repeatedly and emphatically, in a press conference that felt less like damage control and more like a warning shot to the boardroom.
Appointed on a two-and-a-half-year deal in November 2024, Amorim suggested the agreement was always time-limited. “That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone moves on,” he said, adding he will not quit — but equally making it clear he won’t overstay his welcome either.
Oh well, no need for him to wait anymore.
