Bollywood legendJackie Shroff has honoured the legacy of the late Smita Patil on her 39th death anniversary. Shroff uploaded a monochromatic photo of Patil on his Instagram Stories, complemented with the heartfelt words: “Remembering Smita Patil ji on her death anniversary. Always in our hearts.”
The tribute was set to the soulful Lata Mangeshkar song “Shaam Hui” from the 1985 film Aakhir Kyon.
Smita Patil’s Legacy of Strength and Artistic Excellence
Smita Patil, born on October 17, 1955, is remembered particularly for her portrayal of strong, complex female characters and her involvement in significant, socially relevant films.
The late actress debuted in Charandas Chor, directed by Shyam Benegal. During her career, she appeared in a number
of popular films and went on to become one of the prominent actresses of parallel cinema, a New Wave trend in Indian cinema. Manthan, Bhumika, Jait Re Jait, Mirch Masala, Arth, Shakti, Mandi, Ardh Satya, Chidambaram, and Umbartha were among the highly lauded films in Patil’s portfolio that showcased her ability in a variety of genres and stories, which often questioned conventional gender stereotypes.
Within a short span of ten years, she acted in more than 80 movies, won two National Film Awards, and was honoured with the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards of India, in 1985.
Patil was an ardent feminist and a cooperative member of different women’s rights organisations in Mumbai, thus being full of zeal and determination, not only on the screen but also off it.
Smita Patil Died at 31
Smita Patil was married to actor Raj Babbar, with whom she had a son, actor Prateik Smita Patil. She died at the age of 31 on December 13, 1986, due to childbirth complications. Her incredible journey was cut short by her unexpected death, but her influence continues to be felt by generations of artists and filmmakers.
More than 10 of her films were released after her demise. Patil’s last film, Galiyon Ka Badshah, featured her posthumous appearance. Among the cast were Raaj Kumar, Om Shivpuri, Hema Malini, and Mithun Chakraborty etc., and the film came out in 1990.
The Smita Patil Memorial Award for Best Actress was created in the year 1986 in honour of Patil and is given to recognise the career of the most outstanding Indian cinema actresses.

Jackie Shroff will next appear in Ahmed Khan’s upcoming comedy Welcome To The Jungle. The film will feature a massive cast ensemble, including Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal, Disha Patani, Lara Dutta, Raveena Tandon, among others.
