A woman from India, currently living in Tokyo, shared how frightened she was when a strong earthquake shook Japan on December 8. She recorded a short video soon after the tremors and explained how the shaking felt “endless”. Even though she rushed outside in fear, she was surprised to see no one else in her building step out.
The clip has now caught attention online as she talks about what she saw and how people around her reacted. The video begins with the woman describing how strong the tremors were. She said, “Itna tez earthquake tha ki meri toh jaan hi chali gayi thi, kyonki vo ruk hi nahi raha tha.” She then shows the area around her building and points out that none of the residents had stepped outside.
She explains that people in Japan
have deep trust in their buildings and believe they will stay safe even during powerful earthquakes.
Woman Says She Has Never Felt A Quake This Strong In Japan
She adds that she has experienced hundreds of quakes during her time in Japan, but none as long or as intense as this one. The caption on her video reads, “I have experienced more hundreds of earthquakes in Japan but not one like this one, a very long 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Tokyo area for around that even a Tsunami warning has been issued.”
The clip, shared on December 9, has crossed 9,000 views and gathered many comments. A user wrote, “I literally felt like I was in a cradle. While I was sleeping.” Another said, “Stay safe.” Someone else commented, “Mai bhi heel gaye,” while another wrote, “Oh bhai people are like ye toh roz ka hai kuch nhi hoga.”
Tsunami Waves Hit Northern Japan
The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that tsunami waves struck parts of northern Japan shortly after the earthquake. High waves were recorded in Urakawa, Hokkaido, and at the port of Mutsu Ogawara in Aomori.
A 50-centimetre wave hit Kuji port in Iwate, and nearby coastal areas also saw waves between 40 and 50 centimetres. Earlier, the agency had warned that waves up to three metres could strike the northeastern coast.
Injuries Reported After Strong Tremors
Local reports say several people were injured across the affected regions. NHK World Japan said a hotel in Hachinohe, Aomori, reported multiple injuries.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck at a depth of 53.1 kilometres, with its epicentre 73 kilometres east northeast of Misawa. It hit off the coast of Aomori and Hokkaido and triggered tsunami alerts.
Government Response And Safety Measures
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said an emergency team has been set up to assess the situation. She added that public safety is the top priority and all necessary steps are being taken to help residents.
East Japan Railway suspended several train services as a precaution. Japan, located on the Ring of Fire, faces many major quakes each year and remains one of the world’s most earthquake-prone nations.
The incident comes months after an 8.8 magnitude quake hit Russia’s Kamchatka region, sending tsunami waves to nearby countries.
