Powerful And Scary: What OpenAI’s Sam Altman Has Said About New Astra Model

OpenAI’s new AI model Astra is so powerful that the company has decided against launching it for now. Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI has been candidly sharing the details and also giving the reasons behind Astra not getting a wider release to the public, and that probably stems from the recent AI model mishaps at the company and its rival like Anthropic.

OpenAI has been busy with new versions of GPT and the recent model GPT 5.6 Sol has been followed by the much discussed Astra AI model. However, unlike the regular GPTs, this one has become too powerful for its own good, and OpenAI wants to fix those issues before making it generally available.

Astra Not Coming Now: Here’s Why

Altman shared his views on Astra with a post on X recently, and pretty much

sums up where the company is hoping to fix the recent mishaps. “Astra is a powerful model and we are working to make it generally available,” he mentioned.

So why is Astra not ready for a public release and what does he mean by an AI model being “too powerful”? “Given its cyber capabilities, we need a little big longer to do this safely. but hopefully not too long!,” the post adds.

OpenAI fears that Astra is capable of unleashing its dark side by attacking the cybersphere and it needs stronger safeguards to make sure the AI model doesn’t bypass its universe and attack in the open.

Astra would have made its public debut much earlier if not for the recent cyber rogue incidents at both OpenAI and Anthropic that have seen their AI model go past their restricted space and attack third-party websites without being given any command of that nature.

Privacy and AI experts have been warning about days like these, suggesting OpenAI needs to slow down the pace of AI development and ensure their safety systems first. Astra is finally getting that attention but surely other AI models should also now be heavily scrutinised rather than fight the race to launch in the market before competition.
