Yashasvi Jaiswal is India’s first-choice opening batter in Test cricket, and he has also represented the Men in Blue in ODIs and T20Is. The 23-year-old left-handed batter is one of the six Indian batters
to score a century in all three formats of the game, and he was also the member of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup title in June 2024 under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. Jaiswal, who is India’s highest-ranked Test batter, has expressed his desire to captain India in the future.
In a video going viral on the internet from Aaj Tak’s event, when asked if he thinks about becoming India captain one day, Jaiswal said, “Ji bilkul. Mai hamesha sochta hu ki… bann sakta hu… kyu nahi bann sakta. Mai kosish karta rahunga, jab mera time aayega toh hoga. Toh hamesha mai ye sochta hu ki mai acha karu, acha experience gain karu aur aage ke liye dekhu. But still I want to enjoy today (yes, absolutely. I always believe that I can; why not? I’ll keep working hard, and when the right time comes, it will happen).”
Jaiswal, who first made headlines for his super show with the bat in the 2020 edition of the U19 World Cup, has never captained India in any format so far. He in fact has not got the chance to lead Mumbai in domestic cricket as well as his Indian Premier League franchise, Rajasthan Royals.
However, there is a high possibility of him getting a chance to lead the Jaipur-based franchise in IPL 2026. Royals traded their captain, Sanju Samson, to Chennai Super Kings in November 2025, and now they need a new captain. Jaiswal, along with Riyan Parag, Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, will be among the players who could get the opportunity to lead the inaugural edition winners.
No Jaiswal for T20 WC 2026?
Jaiswal is not playing for India in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa. He, in fact, has not played a T20I match for the Men in Blue since July 2024. Jaiswal’s continued absence from the T20I side has raised doubts over his inclusion in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026.
