Dilip Prabhavalkar’s Fantasy Thriller Dashavatar Returns To Theatres In Malayalam

Dilip Prabhavalkar-starrer hit Marathi film Dashavatar became the first-ever Marathi film which was dubbed and released in Malayalam. The Marathi film which was released in September this year witnessed a massive success in theatres.

Nearly three months after the release, the makers confirmed the film’s Malayalam release.

Dashavatar’s Malayalam Release

The Marathi film Dashavatar was released in Malayalam as Dashavataram on December 12. Sharing the news with fans, the makers wrote, “The divine saga awaits you; Dashavatar is now in Malayalam.” The dubbed version is available in selected theatres. Fans can also stream the original Marathi version on the Zee5 streaming platform.

What Is the Plot of Dashavatar?

Helmed by Subodh Khanolkar, Dashavatar follows Babuli Mestri, an ageing traditional folk performer in Maharashtra. Despite advancing age and weak eyesight, he stubbornly continues to perform. His son Madhav (Siddharth Menon) worries about his health and urges him to retire, but Mestri promises to step away once Madhav secures stable employment.

When Madhav finally gets a job, Mestri agrees to deliver one last performance during the Mahashivratri festival. However, the night takes an unexpected turn when Mestri, in the middle of the play, appears to embody the fierce Rudra avatar.

The narrative is structured like a traditional Dashavatar play and begins with a purva-ranga that introduces the cultural and familial context and slowly shifts into an uttar-ranga where myth and present-day conflicts intertwine.

The suspense-thriller is headlined by Dilip Prabhavalkar, with Mahesh Manjrekar, Siddharth Menon, Abhinay Berde, Priyadarshini Indalkar, Sunil Tawde, Ravi Kale, Lokesh Mittal, and many others in key roles. The film is jointly produced by Ocean Film Company, Vipin Agnihotri, and Ocean Art House, with the music composed by AV Prafullachandra.

Dashavatar Marathi Box Office Collection.

The original Marathi version of the film opened to a huge response from critics and was widely praised. It also performed well at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Marathi films of 2025. As per Sacnilk reports, the film collected Rs 28.47 crore worldwide with an estimated Rs 24 crore net in the Indian box office. The film is set to reach a wider range of audiences as it re-opened in theatres in Malayalam.
