A smartwatch is one of the more thoughtful gifts for parents this festive season. It shows who is calling without hunting for the phone, nudges them to walk a little more each day, and keeps a rough eye on sleep and heart rate.
But a first smartwatch can also end up in a drawer if it is hard to read or keeps buzzing with every notification. The right pick and a careful setup make the difference. Here are four smartwatches that are easy for first time users, followed by a simple setup checklist. Prices are as listed on Amazon at the time of writing.

How to set up your parents’ first smartwatch
Set it up on their phone, not yours, and sit with them through the pairing so they know which app controls the watch. Choose a simple watch face with large numbers and turn up the font size and brightness.
Turn off notifications from shopping, social and group chat apps, and keep only calls, SMS and one or two family chats. Too many buzzes is the biggest reason people stop wearing a watch.
Save two or three emergency contacts and show them how the SOS or emergency call works. Set a daily step goal they can reach, not an ambitious one, and pick one fixed time for charging, such as during the morning newspaper.
Health readings on these watches are for general wellness and are not a substitute for a doctor’s advice or a medical device.
Tips before you buy
Pick a big screen. A 1.8 inch or larger display is easiest to read.
Prefer long battery. Watches that last a week or more are less likely to be left uncharged.
Check phone compatibility. Some health features work only with the same brand’s phone.
Choose a soft strap. A silicone or nylon strap is comfortable for all day wear.
Stack bank offers. Check the product page for bank discounts and no cost EMI.
