It was a short and sweet Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 auction in Kochi on Saturday.
Australia captain Sophie Molineux was the most expensive player, joining UP Warriorz for Rs 1.10 crore. Kiran Navgire (Rs 75 lakh) to Delhi Capitals and G Kamalini (Rs 40 lakh) to Gujarat Giants were the next costliest buys.
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) signed Tejal Hasabnis, Chloe Tryon and Vrinda Dinesh in the final accelerated round. UPW also brought back leg-spinner Asha Sobhana for Rs 30 lakh, significantly lower than the Rs 1.1 crore they paid for her in 2026.
Mumbai Indians signed uncapped players Shweta Sehrawat for Rs 20 lakh and Akshita Bhagat for Rs 10 lakh, whileDC made history with the youngest-ever WPL signing of Uma Kashvi.
But as always, despite the limited 27 spots, there were some players who seemed quite unlucky to miss out.
#3 Priya Mishra
Mishra is a full India international with brilliant ODI figures behind her. She has been a consistent performer on the domestic circuit, and her leg-spin could be a good weapon to have for any team, given they are patient enough to develop.
#2 Uma Chetry
Chetry is the only member of India’s 2025 World Cup-winning squad not to be in the WPL. Although she has never displayed amazing power-game in T20s, she has quite a lot of room to grow at the age 24, while being a good wicketkeepr. Her absence makes a good case for more WPL teams.
#1 Chamari Athapaththu
Chamari Athapaththu would likely be the first player in if any team loses an overseas star to injury, but still, her absence feels unfair. She is one of the best T20 players in the world, who can change and win games as an opener, as well as with the ball. Her experience alone warrants her at least a squad place in the WPL.
