A gang posing as central government officers allegedly intercepted an ATM cash-loading van and fled with more than Rs 7 crore on Wednesday, according to police. The incident occurred near the Ashoka Pillar
when the vehicle was transporting cash to the HDFC bank branch in JP Nagar.
The van belonged to CMS Logistics. A police officer told The Indian Express that the gang posed as officials from the Income Tax Department and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and ordered the van to stop, saying they needed to verify the documents for carrying such huge cash without permission.
The suspects allegedly forced the staff to get out of the vehicle and entered the van, and asked the driver to proceed for inspection, as per the police. They allegedly abandoned the driver near Dairy Circle, moved the cash to their Innova car, which had a Government of India sticker, and fled from the scene.
CCTV footage is being examined to trace the route taken by the vehicle and identify those involved. Police confirmed that the vehicle was being tracked and had crossed a toll near Kolar. Based on the initial probe, the police said the Innova car had a fake number plate.
Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said that they formed special teams and deployed them to various areas. “According to the initial investigation, around Rs 7 crore has been robbed, and we are verifying it. The cash was transferred from the CMS van to another vehicle,” he said.
“Our teams are physically on the ground, as well as in the control room under various technical wings. We will try to detect the case at the earliest. Two DCPs and a Joint Commissioner are working on the case,” he added.
A police officer told The Indian Express that another vehicle, a Maruti Zen, is suspected to be involved in the robbery.
