All eyes are on Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as it reports Q4 FY26 earnings today, with the dividend declaration expected to take centre stage yet again. For long-term investors, TCS’s earnings day is not just about revenue or margins—it’s about cash in hand.
A decade of steady (and rising) dividends
TCS has built one of the strongest dividend track records in India Inc. Over the last 10 years, the company has paid dividends almost every quarter, ensuring a predictable income stream for shareholders.
Back in FY16, the total payout stood at roughly Rs 45 per share. Since then, dividends have steadily climbed, backed by robust cash flows and high operating margins. The post-Covid period, in particular, saw a sharp jump in payouts as TCS leaned more aggressively into shareholder returns.
By FY25, the annual dividend had surged to around Rs 170+ per share, reflecting both regular and special payouts. Even in FY26 so far, the company has already distributed Rs 79 per share before the final dividend announcement today.
Special dividends: TCS’s signature move
What makes TCS stand out is its frequent use of special dividends. Whenever cash piles up, the company doesn’t hesitate to return it.
Large one-time payouts—often Rs 40–60 per share—have become a recurring feature in recent years. These specials have significantly boosted total shareholder returns, especially for long-term holders.
If you add it up, TCS has paid close to Rs 1,000 per share in dividends since FY16.
This is a striking number. It means investors have recovered a substantial portion of their investment purely through dividends—without even factoring in stock price appreciation.
Beyond dividends: Buybacks add muscle
TCS has complemented dividends with periodic share buybacks, usually at a premium. While the company has avoided frequent bonus issues or stock splits, buybacks have served as another effective route to return capital.
