Harshdeep Kaur Birthday: Music lovers across India and beyond will soon celebrate the birthday of Harshdeep Kaur on December 16, as the Queen of soulful Sufi music turns 39. Kaur earned herself the title of “Sufi Ki Sultana” for her intensely spiritual and expressive singing style. One of the most cherished voices in Bollywood and independent Sufi music, Kaur is known for her rich vocal texture and capacity to infuse each song with emotion.
Kaur first gained fame in 2008 after competing in and winning the ‘Junoon-Kuch Kar Dikhaane Ka’ singing competition on NDTV Imagine. Her songs, which range from poignant cinematic melodies to devout “qawwalis,” speak to listeners who are looking for transcendence and passion. She has recorded songs for films
in several Indian languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil and Urdu.
Here are some of Harshdeep Kaur’s most memorable Sufi-infused performances as fans celebrate her special day:
Dilbaro
Harshdeep Kaur’s song ‘Dilbaro’ from the film Raazi is a deeply emotional track that beautifully expresses the touching father-daughter bond, particularly the bittersweet feelings of “bidaai.” The poignant tune was written by lyricist Gulzar and composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
Heer
The poignant song from Yash Chopra’s film Jab Tak Hai Jaan captures the intense anguish of a couple’s separation. It was written by Gulzar and composed by AR Rahman. The song masterfully conveys the suffering, yearning, and ageless romance of the fabled love tale.
Katiya Karoon
The emotional folk ballad ‘Katiya Karoon’ from Rockstar skilfully combines genuine passion with rustic simplicity. Written by Academy Award winner AR Rahman, the song combines deep, soulful ballads with lively Punjabi rhythms.
Zaalima
Zaalima, a romantic ballad featuring Pakistani star Mahira Khan and romance king Shah Rukh Khan, is an ideal love song from the movie Raees. Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote the lyrics and JAM8 composed the music, which is performed by Harshdeep Kaur and Arijit Singh.
Jugni
Jugni is a stirring rock ballad performed by Kaur and Arif Lohar from the film Cocktail. The duo deliver a lyrical Sufi-infused rendition, which combines spiritual lyrics and emotive vocals with Punjabi folk and religious themes.
Ik Onkar
Based on the revered Sikh mantra honouring the unity of God, Harshdeep Kaur’s devotional work ‘Ik Onkar’ is famous for its appearance in the movie Rang De Basanti. Her poignant, pensive performance of Ik Onkar emphasises unity, truth, and divine presence while drawing listeners into a place of spiritual contemplation and tranquillity.
