Yami Gautam is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film Haq alongside Emraan Hashmi. Over the years, she has built an impressive career in the industry. In a recent exclusive interview, Yami opened up about her journey in showbiz and how the film Bala marked a turning point in her career. She revealed that many doubted her ability to perform in a comedy, as she had been known primarily for serious roles until then.
In conversation with Pinkvilla, Yami Gautam said, “Bala was something I think no one saw it coming. I know they mean it as a compliment when a lot of people I met later in life, they say, ‘you know we called Amar when we heard he casted you. Aisa kaise Yami ko aap cast kar sakte ho? Kabhi aapne usse haste huwe dekha hain. She
looks damsel in distress.’ Something like that. ‘I don’t think she could do comedy.’”
Yami added that even Bala’s director, Amar Kaushik, had his doubts, but despite that, she believes the film was a major turning point in her career.
Why Yami Gautam Wanted To Quit Acting?
Yami Gautam revealed that people often misjudge her personality based on how she presents herself, sometimes interpreting her demeanour as overly serious. Yami explained that she simply has a straightforward, unpretentious way of carrying herself, without any arrogance. For Yami, Bala was more than just a film; it was a watershed moment. The actress admitted that before the film’s premiere, she had even considered leaving the industry altogether to return to Himachal.
“It’s not easy, but I think the kind of person I am, for me, respect and dignity are really important in life. I cannot do something which I don’t have my heart in or I’m not enjoying working with the people,” she said.
What’s Next For Yami Gautam?
Bala, released in 2019, allowed Yami to showcase her comedic talent alongside co-stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar. Meanwhile, her upcoming film, Haq, directed by Suparn Varma, is inspired by the real-life Shah Bano case and follows Yami’s character, a Muslim woman fighting for maintenance rights in court after her divorce.
