A new discussion has picked up online around how quickly films are now moving from theatres to OTT platforms, with one recent Tamil release becoming the latest example of this fast-changing trend. The film in focus is the Tamil heist drama Kara, starring Dhanush and Mamitha Baiju, which released in theatres on April 30. Directed by Vignesh Raja, the film reportedly earned over ₹50 crore worldwide during its theatrical run.
Now, just weeks after its release, the film is set for its OTT premiere. According to the platform listing, Kara will start streaming on Netflix from May 28. While there has been no official announcement from the team or the platform on social media yet, the listing has already been spotted and widely shared online.
The quick
turnaround has surprised many viewers, especially because the film is arriving on OTT in under a month. Screenshots of the listing have been circulating on X (formerly Twitter), with users debating whether such short theatrical windows are becoming the new normal.
Some users feel this could affect theatre business, as audiences may prefer to wait for the digital release instead of heading to cinemas. Others believe it reflects the film’s box office performance, suggesting OTT platforms are stepping in sooner when theatrical momentum slows down.
One user on X wrote, “#Kara by @dhanushkraja. Release Date: April 30. Streaming Date: May 28. Time to come to streaming: 29 days. Is this how industry is going to save theatres? Those who have NETFLIX subscription and access to various website to do torrent, why would they visit there when they know they can get 4K print in 29 days? @vigneshraja89 not done.”
Another user said, “Dhanush’s #Kara is coming to @NetflixIndia on Thursday 28th of May. It failed at the box office let’s see about OTT,” while a third added, “Don’t know the case of all dhanush movies. But to my knowledge, films that do great theatrical business usually have a delayed ott release. But in the case of kara, it’s almost done with its theatrical business, so the team might not wait longer for its ott.”
The film is set in the 1990s and follows a thief trying to leave his criminal past behind, only to be pulled back when his ancestral home is seized by a bank. It is written by Vignesh Raja and Alfred Prakash and produced by Vels Film International and Think Studios.
Alongside the lead pair, the film features K. S. Ravikumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Karunas, Jayaram, Prithviraj and Sreeja Ravi.
As per Sacnilk, Kara collected around ₹37.50 crore net in India and ₹53.65 crore gross worldwide. The film received mixed reviews in theatres, and its early OTT release has now added to the ongoing debate about how quickly films are moving from cinemas to streaming platforms.
