Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored a brisk fifty, and skipper Ayush Mhatre claimed three wickets with his part-time off-spin, leading India U19 to a 51-run victory over Australia U19 in the second Youth ODI on Wednesday.
This win secured an unassailable 2-0 lead for India in the three-match series. The final game is scheduled for Friday at the Ian Healy Oval.
Australia’s middle-order batter Jayden Draper scored an impressive 72-ball 102, but the team could only reach 249 all out in 47.2 overs, falling short of India’s strong target of 301.
Suryavanshi (70 off 68 balls) set the foundation for India’s innings after his fellow opener Mhatre was dismissed for a two-ball duck. Suryavanshi and Vihaan Malhotra (70 off 74 balls) added 117 runs for the second wicket,
bringing India back on track, but Suryavanshi’s dismissal cost India some momentum.
Wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu (71 off 64 balls) kept the scoreboard ticking with key partnerships with late-order batters, helping India reach 300 before being all out in 49.4 overs.
Australia’s chase started well, reaching 63 for 1 in 18.5 overs. However, off-spinner Kanishk Chouhan dismissed Steve Hogan, triggering a mini-collapse. The home side lost two more wickets — Alex Turner and Yash Deshmukh– at the score of 63, slipping to 63 for four.
Facing a daunting task at 109 for six, the Aussies found hope with Draper and Aryan Sharma (38), who added 112 runs for the seventh wicket. But Mhatre intervened at this critical juncture, taking the wickets of Draper and Aryan in quick succession, ending Australia’s hopes.
