Shubman Gill became the fastest Indian men’s cricketer to score 3,000 runs in ODIs on Saturday (June 13), achieving the stunning record in the first ODI against Afghanistan in Dharamsala — his 62nd innings. The skipper is the second-fastest overall, only behind South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who did it in 57 innings.
For India, Gill broke the long-standing record of one of his idols, Virat Kohli. The former India captain scored 3000 ODI runs in his 75th innings against Sri Lanka on 14th February 2012. Gill is the first Indian and only the seventh player in the world to reach the landmark in under 70 innings.

Gill needed 47 runs to reach the milestone before this match against Afghanistan. He was under pressure in Dharamsala because India needed to chase
a significant target of 195 runs in 25 overs, with the match length halved due to rain before the toss.
But, as if batting on cruise mode just like he does so many times in the IPL, Gill looked unflustered. He reached 47 in just 35 balls, hitting a six and a four in three balls against Mohammad Nabi. The latter shot that took him to the landmark was a superb exhibition of skill, as he walked down the track to a full ball from the spinner and timed the drive with enough power to beat the deep fielders near the sight screen.
Two balls later, he reached his half-century off just 37 balls. This was his 18th ODI fifty.
There was just one moment of doubt. On the last ball of the fifth over, he got a big top-edge on the pull shot and Rahmanullah Gurbaz ran miles behind to catch it but fell just short.
He can now also become the third-fastest run-scorer to 3,000 runs as an opener. He went past 2700 runs in his 62nd innings, and scoring the remaining 250 runs or so in under three innings would put him behind Amla (56), Sachin Tendulkar, and Rohit Sharma (64).
