The Strait of Hormuz, the critical maritime chokepoint that carries around one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies, is set to reopen on Friday after the United States and Iran finalised a peace agreement ending their 107-day conflict.
US President Donald Trump announced the breakthrough on Truth Social on Sunday evening, saying the deal would pave the way for the reopening of the narrow waterway and the removal of restrictions on Iranian ports. The agreement is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19.
Strait Of Hormuz: Trump Announces Removal Of US Blockade
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all,” Trump said, adding that it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the US naval blockade
on Iranian ports.
The reopening of the Strait is expected to ease pressure on global energy markets. Notably, oil prices slipped to their lowest since March after the announcement of peace deal.
“I hereby fully authorise the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and, simultaneously, authorise the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump said.
In a subsequent post, however, Trump clarified that the Strait would officially reopen on Friday following the signing of the agreement in Switzerland.
US, Iran Peace Deal To Be Signed On Friday
The peace deal marks the end of intense diplomacy and military tensions. During the conflict, the United States carried out strikes on Iran, while Trump ultimately stepped back from a threat to take control of Kharg Island, Iran’s key oil export hub.
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is being viewed as one of the most significant outcomes of the agreement, with global oil traders and governments watching closely for the resumption of normal shipping activity through the vital waterway.
“This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region. Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me,” Trump said.
“The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace. With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World,” he said.
The reopening is expected to restore a major artery of global energy trade, allowing oil shipments to resume through the Strait after months of disruption caused by the conflict.
