Visiting India often means exploring its iconic landmarks, and almost every traveller makes it a point to make a stop at the beautiful Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a symbol of eternal
love. So did a travel vlogger visiting Agra, Uttar Pradesh. But what happened there was something she never expected. She explained the incident as a rather “hilarious” personal experience.
In a video she shared on Instagram, the vlogger revealed her unusual experience at the monument. As she explored the timeless beauty of the white marble mausoleum, which houses the tombs of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, a few local men approached her and asked to take pictures with her. Often, when Indians spot foreigners at tourist spots, they ask for pictures with them. The woman took it all in stride and happily agreed. The clip showed her standing with one of the men while the other two clicked photos of them on their smartphones.
The Vlogger Shared She Had A Similar Experience In Egypt
“When you come to India for the attractions and you become the tourist attraction,” she wrote atop the clip. Meanwhile, in her caption, she mentioned that India wasn’t the first place she came across such requests. She recalled a similar experience in Egypt, saying, “This was hilarious. This has happened a few times. In Egypt, I could hardly get away. If this is what being famous is like, I don’t want it. No, thank you, haha.”
Other Foreigners Share Experiencing Same In India
The video quickly garnered attention on social media, with other foreigners sharing their experiences in India and other countries. Many commented on how welcoming and curious locals can be at tourist sites. “I found nothing wrong with it. Some rural people don’t see others of a different colour. I had fun with it – and the most endearing part was that girls wanted to take pictures with me and boys with my husband. Super respectful all around,” said one user.
Another traveller added, “Had the same experience. But not a single disrespectful or touchy encounter. I did not feel unsafe or bad at any point.”
“My husband and I went to the Philippines with two of our sons, who are both blonde and over 6 feet tall. People were constantly stopping them and asking to have pictures taken with our sons. They loved it!!” mentioned a different person.
Meanwhile, some also warned the vlogger, saying, “Quick tip: they take pictures of women and generate AI pictures and videos that are not decent.”
“In my experience, they use the excuse to get physically close to you, then try to touch your body. If you get swarmed in the street, take it seriously. Don’t try and be polite,” warned another.
The vlogger’s video has garnered over 5.7 lakh views.
