A food safety inspection at the Vivekanagar Hockey Club in Bengaluru found unhygienic conditions in the kitchen, along with expired and improperly labelled food products, officials said.
The inspection was conducted on Saturday by the Food Safety Division of the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration within the Greater Bengaluru Authority limits.
Officials found 40 bottles of expired soft drinks at the club. They also seized soda bottles carrying labels that did not comply with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requirements.
The inspection revealed several other food safety violations. The kitchen’s food preparation and storage areas were found to be unhygienic, while required food safety practices were not being followed.

Officials also detected pest infestation in areas where food was being prepared, creating conditions that could lead to contamination.
“In view of the deficiencies observed relating to food safety and hygiene, a notice has been issued to the concerned Food Business Operator (FBO), and further legal action will be initiated as per the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the applicable Regulations, 2011,” the department said.
The inspection was carried out under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration) Regulations, 2011.
“Continuous inspections will be carried out against food manufacturing, storage and sale establishments violating food safety and quality standards, and stringent legal action will be taken as per the applicable laws and regulations,” a statement said.
The inspection was carried out following directions from Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader, according to officials.
In a similar action, a popular private club’s kitchen in the metropolis was closed after an inspection found unhygienic conditions, with 40 kg of expired chillies and other food items seized, officials said on Friday.
The inspection found 40 kg of expired chillies stored for use in food preparation. Improper labelling was also found on 5 kg of breadcrumbs and 2 kg of Sajeera food products, in violation of FSSAI regulations, a senior department official said.
Highly unhygienic conditions were observed in the food preparation and storage areas. The use or storage of unauthorised or prohibited artificial colours in food products was also detected, he said.
The eatery had failed to follow the required food safety measures for the storage and handling of food products. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food products were found stored together, the department said.
“During the inspection, the kitchen was found to be maintained under unhygienic conditions. Expired food products were found and seized. In view of the serious deficiencies relating to food safety and hygiene, the club kitchen was closed,” Srinivas K, Commissioner, Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, said in a statement.
