Many employees complain about heavy workloads, endless meetings and tight deadlines. But a Pune-based professional believes there is something even more worrying than being busy at work.
In a video shared on Instagram, he said the biggest warning sign in a corporate job is when no one depends on you anymore and your workload slowly disappears. According to him, feeling comfortable without learning or taking on responsibilities can hurt long-term career growth.
Why No Work Worries Him
The video was posted by Nihar Patil, who has worked in the corporate sector for over five years. Opening the clip, he said, “The most scariest phase in corporate isn’t pressure. It’s when nobody depends on you anymore or you don’t have any work.”
Patil acknowledged
that burnout is real and many professionals deal with stressful deadlines, long meetings and demanding schedules. Even so, he believes meaningful work plays an important role in building a career.
“Having work is still better than having no work. Because when you have work, you learn, you solve problems, you make mistakes, you become dependable. That’s how your career grows,” he said.
He also warned that getting comfortable with receiving a salary without taking ownership of projects or learning new skills could become a problem over time. “Every month without learning creates a gap that someone else is filling. Corporate changes fast. Technology changes even faster,” he added.
He Urges Employees To Keep Learning
Patil advised professionals who find themselves with extra free time at work to make the most of it by learning something new. He suggested using the time to complete certifications, work on side projects, volunteer for new responsibilities or develop additional skills instead of remaining in their comfort zone.
“Because pressure when managed well, it’s privilege. It means you are still in the game. The day your career becomes too comfortable, that’s the day you should start asking yourself, am I really growing or am I just getting paid?” he said.
In the caption, Patil clarified that he was not encouraging unhealthy work habits or glorifying burnout.
“I’m saying don’t confuse comfort with career growth. Pressure, when managed well, is often a sign that you’re still learning, contributing, and becoming more valuable,” he wrote.
Many People Agreed
The video received several responses from viewers who related to his perspective. One user wrote, “Having no work is a bigger warning sign. You could be laid off at any time.”
Another commented, “Yes, I agree with you.” A third person said, “Having no work is a bigger red flag.”
Another added, “Having no work is a bigger warning sign. You could be laid off in an instant.”
Several others simply commented, “True,” “This is so accurate,” and “Correct,” while one user wrote, “still u will get laid off in one decision”.
