Producer Naga Vamsi, who distributed Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 in the Telugu states, has finally addressed the intense speculation surrounding the film’s financial performance. Ever since the action
spectacle hit theatres on August 14, 2025, social media has been abuzz with claims that Vamsi suffered massive losses—some reports even suggesting an investment of nearly ₹100 crore that allegedly failed to recover.
The producer has now stepped forward to clarify the numbers and dismiss what he calls exaggerated assumptions.
“I Hardly Faced Any Losses,” Says Vamsi
In an interview with Great Andhra, Vamsi responded directly to the chatter circulating on Twitter and film forums. According to him, the financial narrative being pushed online is far from accurate.
“Everyone on Twitter keeps speculating how much loss I’ve faced with War 2. I bought it for ₹68 crore. It brought me a share of ₹35 to ₹40 crore. Yash Raj Films called me to refund ₹18 crore. I had already put forth this condition beforehand. Despite being a Bombay-based company and a corporate production house, they stuck to their word and returned this amount. So, I hardly faced any losses here,” he said.
Vamsi added that the partial refund significantly reduced his risk, making the so-called “huge losses” nothing more than online conjecture.
Telugu Box Office Numbers And Industry Assumptions
Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 reportedly collected ₹56.74 crore nett in Telugu-speaking states, contributing to an overall India nett collection of ₹236.55 crore across languages. Despite these numbers, industry watchers assumed the Telugu distributor had taken a severe hit—especially considering the film’s massive pre-release hype and expectations tied to the YRF Spy Universe.
Vamsi’s clarification, however, paints a more measured picture of the film’s financial outcome at the distribution level.
Pre-Release Hype And A Bold Promise To Fans
Ahead of the film’s release, Vamsi had drawn attention with his fiery speech at the Hyderabad pre-release event, where he directly addressed Jr NTR’s fanbase and set towering expectations for the Telugu version.
At the time, he had declared,
“Our net in Telugu needs to be bigger than the net in Hindi, and it needs to be ten times bigger opening of Devara. Anna raised his collar for us today, and we need to ensure he can do the same all over India. If you watch this film and don’t come out satisfied, I’ll never ask you to watch my films again.”
The statement added to the already sky-high anticipation surrounding the film.
Reception, Performance And Final Numbers
Despite the aggressive buildup, War 2 opened to lukewarm critical reviews and mixed audience reactions, falling short of the monumental expectations attached to the franchise. While it didn’t dominate the box office the way earlier Spy Universe films did, it still managed a respectable ₹364.35 crore worldwide gross.
The film also featured Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana, Anil Kapoor, Soni Razdan, Varun Badola, among others, in pivotal roles.
