'China Should Back India For Permanent UNSC Seat': Jeffrey Sachs At BRICS Dialogues

American economist Jeffrey Sachs expressed support for India’s permanent membership at the United Nations Security Council, saying China should support India’s push for global governance reform.

Speaking at CNN-News18‘s BRICS Dialogues, Sachs said, “China and India have the biggest shared interests in moving from a US-dominated world to a multipolar world. The fact that they are divided because a Mr McMahon in 1914, using the authority of the British Raj, drew a line in the Himalayas, thereby creating a century-long conflict, is not a good reason for both countries to continue to be divided when their fundamental interests all call for resolution.”

As the two giants of the world with 38% of the world’s population, Sachs suggested that India and

China should take their place as world leaders together for a peaceful multilateral world and ensure that the 21st century should not be a US-dominated world.

“I urge that China support India as the sixth permanent member of the UN Security Council. I think that is in China’s interests. I also advocate for India to make suitable amends with China, because your common interests are very strong.”

Sachs also advised India not to be “played” by the United States in the Quad bloc, adding that China and India should strengthen BRICS as the voice of multipolarity.

‘US Responsible For Global Issues’

The world-renowned economist also blamed the United States for rising tensions across the world, alleging that Washington claims dominance and acts as a sole superpower. He likened the US to the “British Empire of the 19th century”, saying it violates most UN regulations and uses unilateral sanctions.

He also claimed that US dominance in the world was over, despite the actions of the current Trump administration. “We have the technologies that we need. We can be safe and secure, and not be in war with each other. However, the mentality of one country to be the hegemon and others should be the followers is the one that is out of date. It dominated the British Raj for a long time in India. It should be put to rest,” Sachs said.
