A young civil engineer from Hyderabad has opened up about the toll of working six days a week, saying the demanding schedule has left her mentally exhausted. In a Reddit post, she said she is now willing to accept a lower salary if it means getting a better work-life balance.
Her post resonated with many professionals, especially those working in industries where six-day work weeks are still common. Many users shared similar experiences and offered advice on changing jobs.
She Wants A Five-Day Work Week
In her Reddit post, the 25-year-old engineer said she graduated in 2023 and now works at a large construction company in Hyderabad. While she is grateful to have a job, she said the work schedule has taken a serious toll on her personal life.
“I’m
mentally exhausted with 6-day work weeks,” she wrote. She explained that by the time she gets home, she has little energy left for household chores, spending time with her family or simply relaxing.
“By the time I get home, I barely have the energy to do basic household chores, spend time with my family, or even enjoy my evenings. Sundays are mostly spent recovering from the week’s exhaustion, and before I know it, it’s Monday again.”
The engineer said she is now looking for another job and is even ready to accept a pay cut if it offers a five-day work week. “We’re humans, not machines just to improve someone’s empire. When will this stop? Almost all the countries are adopting 5days work week.”
Replying to users in the comments, she also revealed that she earns Rs 23,000 per month.

A user asked, “How do you pay rent and save money?” The engineer replied, “There is no money left for savings, 8k for rent, 10K I will send to my home, I’ll keep 5k for transport expenses and miscellaneous expenses.”
Another user wrote, “I am so proud of you, mate. This country has failed you. You deserve a lot more than this. Please realise it. Either make a switch anyhow or leave this country. There is no other option.”
A person commented, “I am so proud of you OP, please apply for new jobs and pray for a better opportunity. 23k for 6 days per week is brutal. I pray you have enough strength every day and sleep well every night. All I can do is pray for you. All the best.”
Another user related to her experience, writing, “I am in kinda the same situation, 6 days in IT, would upskill and quit in the coming months.”
