Rafael Nadal has made it clear: he doesn’t see himself in either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner.
Speaking to Spanish outlet AS, the 22-time Grand Slam champion offered a blunt assessment of men’s tennis’
new ruling duo, stressing that while both dominate the sport, neither mirrors his own game or mindset.
“I don’t identify with either of them,” Nadal said. “They’re different players than I used to be.”
Since Nadal’s retirement in November 2024, the torch has been firmly passed. Alcaraz and Sinner have swept the last eight Grand Slam titles between them, turning early predictions of a wide-open post–Big Three era on their head.
Yet Nadal sees clear contrasts between the two.
Alcaraz, already a six-time major winner at just 22, is the sport’s great wildcard. “Carlos is more unpredictable,” Nadal explained. “He makes more mistakes, plays more spectacular points, and sometimes doesn’t have such a defined playing style — which makes him fun for spectators.”
Sinner, by contrast, is precision personified. “Jannik is more methodical and focused, with a very defined style,” Nadal said. “He adds things step by step, which is why he’s so solid and loses so few matches.”
Still, Nadal pushed back strongly against the idea that Alcaraz lacks consistency — a criticism that has followed the Spaniard despite his success.
“It makes me laugh when I hear that he’s scattered,” Nadal said. “When you look at the results, he’s had an incredibly consistent and solid year at the biggest tournaments. The results say otherwise.”
Alcaraz, 22, has already carved out a historic start to his career, while 24-year-old Sinner has won four Grand Slams and reached the final of every major in 2025. Together, they stand unchallenged at the top of the men’s game.
The Alcaraz–Sinner rivalry will resume in 2026, with fans getting an early taste in a high-profile exhibition match in South Korea next month.
