Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Thursday removed her nephew Akash Anand from the post of the party’s National Coordinator, saying he needs greater political maturity and more experience before being entrusted with a major organisational responsibility.
Mayawati, however, clarified that Anand will continue to remain associated with the BSP and will be assigned other responsibilities within the party.
The decision was announced during the BSP’s All India meeting, where Mayawati also outlined the party’s strategy for the elections ahead, including the crucial 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
What Mayawati Said About Anand’s Future Role
Speaking about Anand’s future role, Mayawati said he is allowed to continue working for the party but needs to develop greater political maturity.
She indicated that he would not be given any major responsibility for the time being.
The BSP chief said the party’s primary focus remains the interests of the Bahujan Samaj and its broader political mission. She maintained that gaining political power is essential to achieving the objective of ensuring that exploited sections become a ruling class.
Mayawati also announced that the BSP will go it alone in elections, ruling out dependence on alliances. She said the party would contest all upcoming elections in the country, including Assembly polls, independently.
The announcement comes as political parties prepare for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, where the BSP will seek to rebuild its electoral base.
The BSP had contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on its own, putting up candidates across all 403 constituencies. The party, however, won just one seat and secured 12.88 per cent of the vote.
The latest decision on Anand also comes amid wider political activity in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 polls.
Uttar Pradesh 2027 Assembly Polls
A day earlier, former AIMIM leader Asim Waqar joined the Congress in Lucknow in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai.
Waqar said opposition parties need to focus on taking on the BJP and accused AIMIM of directing its electoral fight against the Congress and other opposition parties instead of the BJP.
The upcoming Uttar Pradesh contest is expected to primarily pit the BJP and the Samajwadi Party against each other, while the Congress is attempting to strengthen its position through its alliance with the Samajwadi Party.
The 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly currently has 258 BJP MLAs, 107 from the Samajwadi Party and 13 from the Apna Dal. The Congress, which won only two seats after contesting 399 constituencies in 2022, is looking to stage a comeback in the state.
The BSP’s independent strategy will therefore be closely watched as parties gear up for the 2027 election, particularly in light of Mayawati’s decision to keep Anand in the organisation while withholding any major responsibility from him for now.
