Theatres were packed with fresh releases on June 12, giving moviegoers plenty of choices across genres. In the middle of this crowded Friday line-up arrived Governor: The Silent Saviour, a film that brings one of India’s most crucial economic chapters to the big screen.
Headlined by Manoj Bajpayee and directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar, the political drama opened alongside eight other films, making it one of the busiest box-office weekends of the year.
According to early trade figures, Governor: The Silent Saviour earned an estimated ₹90 lakh net in India on its first day. The film’s gross collection stands at around ₹1.08 crore, with final numbers still awaited. Released across 1,427 shows nationwide, the film will now look to the weekend for stronger
growth.
The film faced intense competition from several new releases that hit cinemas on the same day. The June 12 box-office slate included Main Vaapas Aaunga, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past, The Narmada Story, Heer Sara, Scary Movie, Disclosure Day and Backrooms.
Among the new releases, Main Vaapas Aaunga emerged as the day’s top performer with a net collection of ₹1.15 crore. Featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Raina, the film was screened across 2,302 shows. Kangana Ranaut’s Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata followed with ₹1 crore net from 2,181 shows.
Despite operating on a comparatively smaller scale, Governor managed to stay among the top-performing Hindi releases of the day. Trade reports indicate that the film collected around ₹0.37 crore net from 1,020 shows, securing a place among the leading releases in the crowded marketplace.
At its core, Governor: The Silent Saviour tells the story of A. Ramanan, played by Manoj Bajpayee. The character is inspired by former RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan, who played a key role during India’s 1991 economic crisis.
The film explores a turbulent period when India’s foreign exchange reserves were running dangerously low, inflation was rising and the Gulf War had added to the country’s financial troubles. As the crisis deepens, Ramanan is tasked with helping steer the nation through one of its most challenging economic moments.
The narrative also revisits the landmark decision to transport more than 60 tonnes of gold to overseas banks in order to secure foreign exchange and prevent a sovereign default.
Apart from Manoj Bajpayee, the film features Madhoo Shah as Vandita Ramanan, the wife of A. Ramanan. The cast also includes Noushad Mohamed Kunju as Deputy Governor C. Rangarajan and Adah Sharma as journalist Aditi Verma. Supporting roles are played by Paritosh Sand, Jaywant Wadkar, Krisha Kurup, Rajeev Gaursingh, Sanjay Sonu and Jigar Shah.
